Learning the language allows them to feel less isolated in a country where everyone speaks another language. It also means that they won’t stick out like a sore thumb. They can order food, ask for directions, or help and ask for extra towels from the inn or hotel without grappling for a language translation dictionary. The Russian people will take a tourist more seriously if they can speak a little of the language.

Russia has always been very involved in politics and world events. This means that Russia is present in the news very often. Journalists have to have some knowledge of the Russian language to be able to report the news as they get it, and quickly. Journalists may also have to sometimes travel to Russia in order to get a story first hand or to talk to the people in which case they are also going to need to know the language.
Lastly, students everywhere are learning Russian. Some students might want to travel to Russia and teach. Others might want to study Russian literature or become a mathematician.
